A 9 ans, il est lauréat d'un concours de piano amateur
Il a étudié la contrebasse
C'est en 1928, quand il commence à jouer dans un big band
de Philadelphie qu'il va découvrir l'orgue Hammond.
Cet instrument va lui apporter la célébrité.

créateur du style jazz "funk et soul"
premiers enregistrements en 1956 chez le label "Blue note"
1963, il signe aussi sur le label "verve"
